We created an inventory management system for a ready mix concrete providing company, which tracked the flow of their concrete inventory in and out of several projects.
CHALLENGE
Our client would receive cement from their customers to be made into concrete. This concrete would then be used for several projects, but unused cement would be left with our client and stored for future projects.
Our clients then had a hard time keeping track of how much cement each of their clients had stored with them, along with which projects each bag of cement was used for. There were many exceptions to the standard process which were difficult to document, such as customers who had ex-deals and those who bypassed other steps in the process.
PROCESS
We studied our client’s operations and saw that they did not simply collect cement from their customers, process them, and transfer them to project sites. We recommended ways to standardize their operations so that the system could be as automated as possible.
SOLUTION
We created an inventory management system which:
1. tracked the transfers of cement from their clients’ warehouse to theirs, and from their warehouse to the project location;
2. determined how much cement each of their clients has stored with them; and
3. showed which projects the bags of cement were being used for.
IMPACT
Our system automated many of our clients’ processes which used to be done manually on a spreadsheet. The new system made tracking and report-generating more efficient and less prone to errors.
